Carolynne Hitter Brown 

Carolynne is Adjunct Professor of Christian History at Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Hamilton, MA and the Campus for Urban Ministerial Experience in Boston. She is an interdisciplinary scholar who holds undergraduate and master's degrees in music and a doctorate in history from Boston University. Her first book, Singing Through Struggle: Music, Worship, and Identity in Postemancipation Black Churches, explores the vital role music played in nurturing Black citizenship and identity during the Reconstruction era. Carolynne is most proud of the fresh archival sources her book brings to the world. As a white scholar of Black history, Carolynne is passionate about facilitating conversations that nurture reconciliation and healing and bringing Black history to those outside Black experience who will benefit from learning new perspectives.
