About the Role
Slave Legacy History Coalition Support
The Slave Legacy History Coalition is a Descendant-led “consortium of individuals and organizations engaged in the preservation of the history of enslaved people in the Cambridge, Boston communities and beyond.” LONG is an active member.
Coordinate with Coalition founders and members to identify and provide strategic support to the growing Coalition.
Education Projects
Support upcoming collaborative projects to develop educational materials and programming in connection with new poetry and other media reflecting the site’s history of slavery, freedom, and activism.
Participate in workshops with Descendants to consult on multimedia development
Develop an online StoryMap (technical experience not required)
Manage an engagement budget.
Make recommendations to LONG staff on strengthening engagement and support to Descendant community.
Provide occasional visitor information, assist with Summer Festival and Juneteenth events.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The intern will gain professional experience in historic site interpretation, program planning, and partnerships. They will also experience budgeting, customer service, and outreach.
This internship includes a $500 stipend for professional development, which may be expended on a professional conference or other training. The site will provide additional training, access to NPS and partner webinars, and cross-disciplinary networking.
Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year educational institution seeking a degree or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months). This is an interdisciplinary and developmental position. Relevant fields of study include, but are not limited to: Education, History, Public History, Museum Studies, English, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, Languages, Sociology, Anthropology, Communications, and Visual Art. Previous museum experience not required.

Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site (LONG) is a historic house museum and cultural institution managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Originally preserved as the headquarters of general George Washington and the home of 19th-century poet Henry Longfellow, current work prioritizes historically marginalized histories associated with the site.
